The Story of Southern Hills Outreach Foundation
In 2018, a group of like-minded people decided we needed to do more for our community than we were doing. For a while, we volunteered with other groups in the Oklahoma City area. We realized that we had a heart and a vision for a regular homeless outreach run by Southern Hills United Methodist Church. Knowing that more support was needed, SHUMC hired an associate minister, to help direct this ministry. The Homeless Outreach Mobile Ministry (HOMM) was born. The ministry was created to serve in ways to help fight hunger. Part of this ministry is our Meals on Wheels that helps homebound individuals. In June 2021, the HOMM had located to River Park in Stockyards City, and was regularly ministering with over 80 individuals of lower socio-economic status receiving services each week.
Between June and December of 2021, the HOMM had grown, regularly serving over 180 people each week. As the reach and impact of the HOMM continues to expand, so also the need for enthusiastic, caring and resourceful volunteers who have a passion for making a real difference in the lives of real people. In 2022, to meet this rapidly growing need, the Southern Hills Outreach Foundation was formed.
Today, you will find us at Exchange Baptist Church just east of the Stockyards every Tuesday, serving our marginalized populations, alongside many volunteers. In 2024, we served over 13,000 meals to help combat hunger. Someday, with a bit of hope and the reformation of the hearts of people, there will no longer be a need for an outreach like this. For now, the outreach and the need for resources, continues to grow as the marginalized population in Oklahoma City continues to grow.
